Certificate of Apprenticeship
The internship candidate model allows adult employees in Finnøy Gear & Propeller to receive formal education with full pay. Sufficiently documented practice in a learning subject replaces the need for theoretical teaching.
Stig Harald Vaade is one of three employees in his department who is currently taking advantage of this opportunity. He possesses versatile and long experience in the CNC machining profession. In December 2020, he passed the theory exam and receives adapted guidance and training in the workplace before he takes the practical test in the summer of 2021. For the employees, there are financial benefits to having a journeyman's license because it grants a higher salary step.
Having a high proportion of skilled labor is to be regarded as a hallmark of quality and is also a requirement in public tenders. Finnøy Gear & Propeller is used to having apprentices, but this is the first batch of trainee candidates since the scheme was introduced. The general manager of Nordre Ålesund Opplæringskontor, Marit Håhjem Volstad, has assisted with learning resources in the subjects so that the candidates will satisfy the requirement for theoretical competence.
Jan-Olof Karlsson, foreman, thinks that the trainee candidate model is a win-win situation for everyone involved: “The workforce is our most important resource and it is crucial for our future production level that we manage it correctly. Therefore, the scheme where we can facilitate flexible follow-up training of the existing workforce is of great value to us ", he says.
